After taking half a day and a good night’s rest to reflect on yesterday’s match, I keep hearing the same phrase come up in conversation: most exciting match I’ve ever seen in person. I said that directly after the match and here nearly a day later I haven’t changed my mind. Jason Jung and Dominik Koepfer put on an epic 125 minute show, ending in a 7-5 tiebreaker after the third set was locked at 6 games all.
It’s here! Championship Sunday is mere hours away. In order to get there we started today with our second doubles semifinal. In complete opposite fashion to the singles draw, the doubles had all 4 top seeds make it into the semis. With second seeded Luke Bambridge and Joe Salisbury into the final already, all that was left was to see if it would be first-seeded Ariel Behar and Maximo Gonzalez, or fourth-seeded Marcelo Arevalo and Roberto Maytin that would join them. In a surprise start Arevalo and Maytin raced out to a huge lead, winning the first set 6-1 and earning 7 break points compared to only 1 break chance for Behar and Gonzalez. In the second set Behar and Gonzalez were able to up their service games and win every break point they faced, but were unable to secure any breaks themselves. As we headed into the tiebreak Arevalo and Maytin’s incredible 86% first serve percentage was just too much to overcome. They took the tiebreak 7-3 and are off to the finals at 2 PM tomorrow…
9 hours of tennis on Kunal Patel Stadium Court today and almost every player looked as if they could make the final on Sunday. That wasn’t surprising given we’re down to the final 8, where seeded players are usually starting to meet up. What was surprising was that we had no seed vs seed matchups at all, and even further still, we’ll have none for the rest of the tournament! All 4 seeded players in action today lost, showing how deep this field truly is…
It was yet another day of tight matches and tiebreaks today at the KPSF Open. In the opening singles match of the day Dennis Novikov looked like he might not continue the form that led him to beat the number one seed in the first round. He dropped the first set 5-7 to Daniel Galan but managed to bounce back and win the next two frames 6-3, 6-4. Despite playing the full three sets Novikov managed to finish the match in just an hour and 42 minutes, which should be helpful as he’ll be up first for his quarterfinal match in tomorrow’s day session…
Wednesday at the KPSF Open was a day of clutch performances from nearly every match winner, the tension is soaring as we head into the final four days of the tournament. Up first on Kunal Patel Stadium Court was former Stanford #1 Bradley Klahn against fellow American Mitchell Krueger. With so many US players advancing in the first round, the domestic matchup will be a common theme over the next two days…
The Kunal Patel San Francisco Open will be home to a field full of young American talent in 2018. Among them, 20-year-old Michael Mmoh will be looking to improve on his 2017 KPSF semi-final result with a win. Mmoh has had an impressive start to 2018 with a win over world No. 33 Mischa Zverev at the Brisbane International. Mmoh will have to compete with fellow American and top-seed Bjorn Fratangelo if he is to take away the title…
After a successful inaugural year on the ATP Challenger Tour, the KPSF Open is back for 2018! The 2017 reviews could not have been better, with atpworldtour.com calling the event a “smashing success.” KPSF Open alumni players had a fantastic season as well, posting wins over top-10 world ranked players five times, including a victory over world #1 Andy Murray just a few short weeks later at Indian Wells. With expectations for 2018 even bigger and better, you do not want to miss the 2018 KPSF Open!
